ATLAS Results from the first Pb-Pb Collisions

چکیده
The ATLAS detector is capable of resolving the highest energy pp collisions at luminosities sufficient to yield 10’s of simultaneous interactions within a bunch collision lasting <0.5 nsec. Already in 2011 a mean occupancy of 20 is often found in pp running. In 2004 studies by ATLAS showed that the detector would have excellent performance also for the foreseeable particle multiplicities in the highest energy p-Pb and Pb-Pb collisions that the LHC will produce. These studies resulted in a letter of intent to the LHC committee by ATLAS to do physics with these beams also. In the past 2 years of data taking, ATLAS detector performance studies have confirmed these expectations at the actual multiplicities presented below. The ATLAS program removes an artificial specialization that arose about 30 years ago in high energy physics when the energy and intensity frontier moved to colliders. Before that time, for example, the same experiment that discovered the Υ (CFS and E605 at Fermilab) also measured the nuclear modification factor in the production of high pT identified charged hadrons using nuclear targets from Beryllium through Tungsten.

Exploring the LHC medium with electromagnetic probes
Heavy-ion collisions will enter a new era with the start of the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC). A first short run with proton-proton collisions at the injection energy of 0.9 TeV will be followed by a longer one with pp collisions at 10 TeV. First Pb-Pb collisions at √ sNN=5.5 TeV will take place in 2009. Three experiments (ALICE, ATLAS, and CMS) will study both pp and Pb-Pb collisions. A sel...
متن کاملNew results on fully corrected dijet asymmetry in Pb+Pb collisions with ATLAS
The phenomenon of events containing highly asymmetric dijet pairs is one of the most striking results in heavy ion physics, providing the first direct observation of in-medium jet energy loss at the Large Hadron Collider. Detailed measurements of a centrality-dependent dijet imbalance in 2.76 TeV Pb+Pb collisions using data collected by the ATLAS detector in the 2011 LHC heavy ion run are prese...
متن کاملMeasurement of multi-particle azimuthal correlations in pp, p + Pb and low-multiplicity Pb + Pb collisions with the ATLAS detector
Multi-particle cumulants and corresponding Fourier harmonics are measured for azimuthal angle distributions of charged particles in pp collisions at √ s = 5.02 and 13 TeV and in p + Pb collisions at √ sNN = 5.02 TeV, and compared to the results obtained for low-multiplicity Pb + Pb collisions at √ sNN = 2.76 TeV. These measurements aim to assess the collective nature of particle production. The...
